  • Resumen
    • The ICOMOS symposium, held at Florence in May 1981, dealt with the theme of "The Revitalization of Small Historic Gardens"; yet the problem of the numerous private and predominantly small Renaissance gardens of Florence was hardly touched upon. And the problem here is the extent to which what we see today represents what was created during the Renaissance. It was of course a time when, in imitation of the Romans, a new enjoyment of country living tempted the new social class of humanists and wealthy merchants under the rule of the Medici to take advantage of the magnificent building-sites on the hills surrounding Florence. Many of their gardens would appear to exist today, as the view from Fiesole over the hillsides towards Florence suggests ; no wonder it was known as "the city of gardens".
