Resumen de Two Notes on the Tradescants
In 1634, when the elder John Tradescant published his Plantarum in Horto, a list of the plants growing in his botanic garden at South Lambeth, he included four varieties of Clematis. Three of these, which he described as "Clematis flore pleno", "Clematis flore caeruleo" and "Clematis flore rubro", were all forms of Clematis viticella L., a variety from Southern Europe which had been cultivated in England since the middle of the previous century. The fourth he called "Clematis Virginiana".
