  • Versailles specialists have long utilized an early poetic description of the gardens of Versailles entitled "Explication de toutes les grottes, rochers et fontaines du chasteau royal de Versailles, maison du solei!, et de la Ménagerie. En vers héroiques". Until recently, the poem remained in manuscript form in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris (ms. fro 2348); in 1969-1971, however, Marcel Raynal published it almost in its entirety in the periodical ersailles, so that it is now conveniently available with excellent annotations and illustrations.
