Of all the French royal chateaux of the Louis XIV period, none was as closely and personally associated with the King as Marly. Entirely conceived and executed during the reign of the Sun King, Marly was unusual and enigmatic in both its plan and decoration. Although it was destroyed in the aftermath of the Revolution, its appearance can be reconstructed in remarkable detail thanks to plans, views, descriptions, and archival documents.
