  • In 1603 the upland principality of Kulmbach and Bayreuth was separated from the lower-lying principality of Brandenburg-Ansbach. On 2 December 1791 the Margrave Alexander signed abdication papers and set off for England. The gardens which form the subject of this article are thereby delimited in terms of territory and time by these key dates and boundaries.
