  • Although the title may suggest it, I am not attempting to speculate about some universal problem in Natural History. It may be possible to draw general conclusions from the evidence, but what follows is primarily concerned with the trees planted on one particular estate within one short period ofyears. So I must start by defining the place, the time and the problem.
