Hazel Conway and Brent Elliott have written about the Manchester Parks in the 1840s and have referred to Joshua Major as the designer who won the competition to design one of the first park systems ever to be established. Little is known about Major, and the following is an attempt to piece together the facts which have already been published, or those which have come to light over the past few years.
