Resumen de Menageries and the landscape garden

Sally Festing

  • Long before the eighteenth century, exotic animals were established as prestigious gifts and were kept throughout Europe by Popes, Kings, Dukes and Emperors. Jacob Burkhardt considered that menageries were part of the style and standard of living expected of a Renaissance prince and by the seventeenth century France and Holland boasted superb collections in architectural settings.
