Peacock, alert to the fashions of his contemporaries, inevitably addressed matters of garden design. To these, historians will need to refer, but perhaps with some guidance as to how they should be read; equally students of the English novel, one knows, will need to be led through the thickets of landscape garden controversy. The editors of this new addition to the World's Classics Library fulfill both tasks well and economically, though perhaps failing to emphasize that attacks on Capability Brown tended (and tend) to confuse his visual finessewith the clumsy imitations of his followers.
