  • Resumen
    • The display of water in its myriad manifestations was a vital feature of Roman architectural design. In the vast corpus of Roman architectural typology nowhere is water more richly exhibited than in the villa urbana. It is the aim of this paper to examine the structural role of water architecture in Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli (c. 118-138 A.D.), for in no other villa urbana is this display better represented. Moreover, the villa is a rare example of a composition whose physical contours were in large part determined by the emperor himself. It is therefore possible to consider the direct influence of the amateur architect Hadrian upon the nature of the watershow.
