  • Resumen
    • Robert W. Berger is keenly interested in what might be called the intellection of gardens. In the Garden ofthe Sun King: Studies on the Park of Versailles focuses on the symbolic content rather than on the functional or decorative aspects of landscape architecture created for the palace during the reign ofLouis XIV. Berger moulds his inquiry around specific sites (Le Nôtre's Labyrinth, Mansart's Colonnade) and objects (Bernini's "Louis XIV Equestrian" statue) whose symbolic and allegorical underpinnings are particularly prophetic. They become the subjects of his chapters as well as the centrepieces of his argument. That argument is based on the necessity of re-examining these in the light of period writings and contemporary historical contexts in order to comprehend their original meaning.
