    País de colonização portuguesa, Timor-Leste foi ocupado pela Indonésia, no período entre 1975-1999; caracterizado pela diversidade linguística e por uma sociedade multicultural, viu-se, no tempo indonésio, submetido a uma política de "destimorização2 que, no aspecto linguístico, significou a minimização do uso do tétum (língua nacional), a proibição da expressão em língua portuguesa e a imposição da utilização da língua indonésia. Com a independência e a constituição da República Democrática de Timor-Leste, em maio de 2002, o português assume, ao lado da língua tétum, o estatuto de oficial. Partindo dos conceitos de lusofonia e de identidade, traçamos um percurso em que refletimos acerca da construção da identidade linguística de Timor-Leste, inserido no espaço lusófono, recorrendo a depoimentos e registros de estudiosos, políticos e populares timorenses.

    A former Portuguese colony, Timor-Leste suffered violent occupation by Indonesia from 1975 to 1999. During the Indonesian occupation, as a multicultural and multilingual country, East Timor found itself subjected to a policy of "distimorization", which, in terms of language policies, meant the minimization of the use of the Tetum language (their lingua franca), the prohibition of the use of the Portuguese language and the imposition of Indonesian in teaching and in public life. With its independence and the institutionalization of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, in May 2002, the Portuguese language gained official status along with Tetum. Based on the concepts of Lusophony and identity, we reflect upon the construction of the linguistic identity of East Timor within the lusophone context, by resorting to accounts and records by researchers, politicians and Timorese citizens.
