  • Resumen
    • Drawing from certain criticisms of Dominus Iesus, the author demonstrates first how, on the basis of the phrase subsistit in of Lumen Gentium 8, the Declaration reasserts that there is only one Church of Christ, and it subsists in the Catholic Church. From this follows the recognition of the status as Churches, though wounded, of the Orthodox Churches, as well as the impossibility of such a recognition, in the proper sense of the term, of those ecclesial communities which derive from the Protestant Reformation. In both cases, though with different emphases, there is the problem of the ways and conditions necessary for the reestablishment of full communion. The author concludes that, given the elements of truth and sanctification present in the above-mentioned Churches and ecclesial communities, one cannot speak sic et simpliciter of their "return" to the Catholic Church. But given the presence of true doctrinal divergences touching on matters of faith, the path of "differentiated consensus" it is not a possibility either, since, while respecting legitimate theological pluralism, it does not lead to a common profession of faith in its integrity.
