The aim of the present paper is to give a historical and linguistic overview of the peculiar bilingual period in the Iberian Península in the 16th and 17th centuries, followed by historical, cultural and social background describing language behaviour, language contact phenomena and the mutual interference between the two languages: Spanish and Portuguese. By pointing out the most interesting examples in the area of phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary we wish to show the Spanish influence on the Portuguese and the Portuguese influence on the Spanish used by the Court in Lisbon.
