  • In 1666 Henry Howard, grandson of the famous Earl of Arundel, created in the grounds of Albury Park in Surrey a large garden in the Italian style, for which he asked his neighbour and friend, John Evelyn, to draw up the plans. �I designed for him�, says Evelyn in his Diary, �that plat [plan] for his Canale & Garden, with a Crypta thro the hill &c.�1 (figure 1). The �Crypta� referred to was a tunnel through the hill, some 500 ft. long and flanked at its entrance by a large brick exedra in a classical style, containing a pool and fountain (figure 2).
