This study means to grade the methodological importance of Pallucchini's unique critical paper about Henri Matisse on the occasion of the 1950 exhibition at Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome.
By analysing the contemporary art and its link with European pictorial tradition, Pallucchini recognizes in the French artist the main connection between the classical ("latina") inspiration and the oriental ("bizantina") source; so, Matisse is called by the art historian, "il maggiore dei pittori viventi".
