  • Military personnel and their families enrolled in certain Department of Defense health insurance plans are having difficulty finding clinicians who will provide them care, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported April 3.

    In 2012, the defense department offered health care services to about 9.7 million eligible beneficiaries through its TRICARE insurance program. TRICARE offers health maintenance organization (HMO), fee-for-service, and preferred provider organization options. The GAO analyzed 2008-2011 beneficiary survey data and found that civilian physicians' acceptance of new TRICARE patients has decreased. Nearly 1 in 3 of the beneficiaries who were not enrolled in the HMO plan experienced problems finding a civilian clinician who would accept TRICARE insurance.
