Resumen de Evidence Lacking for Benefit From Oral Cancer Screening

Mike Mitka

  • Current evidence about the benefits and risks of screening for oral cancers in asymptomatic adults is insufficient to support such screening, states the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) in a draft recommendation, reaffirming its previous stance (http://tinyurl.com/86anrq2).

In 2013, there will be an estimated 36 000 new cases and 6850 deaths from oral cancer, which includes cancers of the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx. Relative 5-year survival is 82.4% for localized disease and 33.2% for distant metastases. More than half of all persons with oral cancer have regional or distant metastases at the time of diagnosis.
