    Quien busque en la literatura secundaria sobre la Teoría Crítica de los años treinta y cuarenta los diferentes aspectos de la industria cultural, encontrará sobre todo referencias a los trabajos de Max Horkheimer y Theodor W. Ador-no, particularmente al célebre capítulo �La industria cultural� en Dialéctica de la Ilustración, publicada en 1947. En dicho texto, la crítica de la industria cultural se centra primordialmente en el cine, la televisión y la música. Pero, ¿y la litera-tura? Aquí destaca un miembro menos conocido del Instituto de Investigación Social: Leo Löwenthal. Éste había indagado, ya a comienzos de los años treinta, la forma en que la literatura contemporánea aparecía en la cultura de masas. En los años treinta y cuarenta, Löwenthal escribe dos ensayos que ponen de manifiesto que la literatura biográfica debe ser entendida como parte integran-te de la industria cultural. Estos textos están en estrecha relación con el capítu-lo sobre la industria cultural de Dialéctica de la Ilustración. En sus análisis de la literatura biográfica, Löwenthal evidencia los mismos rasgos de la cultura de masas que Adorno y Horkheimer habían detectado en el cine y en la música.

    If you browse through the secondary literature of the Critical Theory of the 30s/40s and search for the aspects of culture industry, most of the time you will be referred to the works of Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno. Especially the famous chapter �culture industry� of Dialectic of Enlightment, which was published in 1947, is mentioned first. Primarily movies, TV and music is at the center of analysis in this chapter. But what is about literature? At this point a less famous member becomes important: Leo Löwenthal. Alrea-dy in the beginning of the 30s he posed the question in which shape contem-porary literature appears in cultural industry. During the 30s and 40s Löwen-thal wrote two essays which illustrate that the biography literature is part of mass culture. These works have to correlate with the chapter �culture industry� of Dialectic of Enlightment. The aspects of mass culture, which Horkheimer and Adorno detected in movies and music, theses aspects were evinced by Löwenthal in the biography literature.
