The interpretation of geomorphology, within the framework of geotourism, is a form of educational communication. It must take into account the public to which it is addressed, particularly with regard to its perception of the landscape.
This article presents the results of research concerning the identification of landforms in various alpine environments by different groups and seeks individual and geomorphological factors to explain the observed schemata. Furthermore, interpretive possibilities are sought to make landforms or invisible values (scientific, cultural, regional identity) “visible” in order to enhance the public's knowledge and comprehension of geomorphology and thus clear the way for a patrimonial view of the landscape.
