    A comienzos del siglo XVII, dos de los más interesantes viajeros europeos a Oriente, el español García de Silva y Figueroa y el italiano Pietro della Valle, coincidieron en la corte del šāh ‘Abbās el Grande de Irán. Ambos tenían un singular interés por los monumentos y las ruinas, y los dos visitaron las más interesantes del país, como Persépolis. Amenos narradores de su experiencia, el español y el italiano fueron los primeros europeos en destacar interesantes aspectos de las antiguas culturas, realizando ambos significativas aportaciones a la Arqueología y la Historia del Oriente antiguo.

    In the early seventeenth century, two of the most interesting European travellers to the Near East, the Spanish García de Silva y Figueroa and the Italian Pietro della Valle visited the court of Shah Abbas the Great of Iran. Both had a very interest in the monuments and ruins, and the two visited the most interesting ruins of the country, as Persepolis. Pleasant narrators of their experience, the Spanish and the Italian were the first Europeans to highlight interesting aspects of ancient cultures, making significant contributions to the archeology and history of the ancient Near East.
