From a communication point of view, the performing arts are a variable set of artistic practices that involve processes of creation and production of meaning, and the way that this circulates through the construction and relation with the viewer.

At the turn of last century, the performing disciplines such as theatre, dance or opera began a study about the significance of the spectacle, driving the focus to the criticism of how the dramaturgical tradition had disciplined the relations between art forms and its contents. Later, the contemporary twist proposed a research about the meaning, through the review of the classical disciplines and the concept of performativity.

Since this moment, acting does not necessarily mean any kind of action, and can even ignore it completely, but it implies an investigation about the way in which the performance guides the meaning process through the interaction between the scenic proposal and the viewer.

The performative research analyzes the process of theatrical creation and its reception from the building process itself, assuming that both subject and object of the investigation are part of it.
