El apego es el vínculo que se establece tempranamente entre la díada madre e hijo y que ontogénicamente en su origen evolutivo asegura el mantenimiento de la especie.
Es fundamental que el mismo se realice en condiciones favorables para el buen desarrollo emocional y cognitivo del niño, fortaleciendo su salud mental; su realización en condiciones desfavorables se caracteriza por diferentes tipos de apego, que puede resultar en variados trastornos de conducta que afectarán al niño hasta la adultez, lo que explica el origen adquirido de muchas patologías psiquiátricas. La transmisión del apego se realiza en forma intergeneracionalmente, y se deben promover las medidas preventivas en las gestantes con factores de riesgo para facilitar el apego seguro, así como conocer el rol del pediatra en el fomento del mismo.

Attachment is the bond established early between a child and his or her mother and which since its evolutionary origin has ensured the continuation of the species. It is vital that this bond be established in conditions favorable for the good emotional and cognitive development of the child to strengthen his or her mental health. The formation of such bonds in unfavorable conditions creates different types of attachment that can result in behavioral disorders that affect the child into adulthood and can explain the acquired origin of many psychiatric illnesses.
Creation of attachment is intergenerational, and preventative measures in pregnant women with risk factors must be promoted to facilitate positive attachments, meaning that the pediatrician must be aware of his or her role in its promotion.
