This paper will show the value of using cross-linguistic examples of grammaticalization in providing direction for an investigation, as well as in helping to make a seemingly unusual change perhaps seem more comprehensible. The major focus of this paper will be on the definitive articles of Amharic and other South Ethiopian languages, though data from mehri and numerous other Semitic languages will also be presented.
