Resumen de Hacia la sostenibilidad de los museos en América Latina y el Caribe

De las más de 7.000 instituciones museológicas que existen en América Latina y el Caribe, alrededor del 80% son museos medianos y pequeños que no cuentan con las condiciones y recursos necesarios para realizar eficientemente sus labores mínimas. Lo anterior, sumado a un contexto de cambios que han sacudido estas instituciones hasta sus cimientos, provoca la necesidad de que el museo asuma, de manera impostergable, su compromiso de generar al menos parte de su sostenibilidad, y estar así en condiciones de satisfacer las demandas actuales y convertirse en instituciones que verdaderamente estén al servicio de la sociedad y su desarrollo. Este artículo busca compartir algunas consideraciones sobre la situación de los museos en América Latina, para finalmente dar un breve repaso a la propuesta de sostenibilidad para las instituciones museológicas desde la perspectiva de la Fundación ILAM (Instituto Latinoamericano de Museos).

More than 7.000 museological institutions exist in Latin America and the Caribbean, and about 80% are medium and small sized museums that do not have the conditions and resources necessary to carry out the basic museological functions in an efficient way. Such a situation, when seen in a context of changing realities that have shaken these institutions to their very core, makes us understand the urgent need to transform museums into organizations that assume their commitment of contributing to their own sustainability and thus being in a position of meeting the current demands (of their visitors, donors, authorities), becoming institutions truly devoted to society and its development. This article expresses the thoughts of the author on the situation of museums in Latin America and the Caribbean, on those new realities that frame their operations and finally gives a brief overview of a sustainability proposal for museums from the perspective of Fundación ILAM.
