Historical grammar of Italian was lacking a thorough synthesis until the publication of the present work. Salvi's and Renzi's ambitious grammar is entirely based on a modern generative model, and planned to cover systematically all sectors of mediaeval synchronic development of Italian. Regretfully, these aims have not been reached, largely as a consequence of the method applied in the descriptive framework, to a lesser extent also due to the loose grid of mediaeval attestations.
