La imagen de David como intérprete musical fue una de las más extendidas del rey bíblico en los siglos medievales. Junto a los Ancianos del Apocalipsis y la figura del ángel músico, constituyó uno de los paradigmas visuales de la música sacra. Su iconografía se apoya en pasajes bíblicos que describen las prácticas musicales del monarca: como pastor en su juventud, en la corte de Saúl o, ya como rey, al recibir el Arca de la Alianza en Jerusalén. A todo ello se sumó la consideración de David como salmista, determinante en la reputación musical del monarca. Pese a concurrir en algunos ciclos narrativos davídicos o veterotestamentarios, resultó habitual representar el tema de forma autónoma.

The image of David as a musical performer was one of the most widespread icons of the biblical king during the Middle Ages. Alongside the Elders of the Apocalypse and the figure of the angel musician, it became one of the visual paradigms of sacred music. Its iconography is based on biblical passages that describe the musical practices of David while he was still a young shepherd boy, at the court of Saul, or already as a king receiving the Ark of the Covenant in Jerusalem. Besides, the conception of David as psalmist was a determining fact in the monarch's musical reputation. Even though it was included in some Davidic or Old Testament narrative cycles, it became common to depict the theme alone.
