    The February 20 Movement brings into question the dynamics at work in Moroccan opposition groups, and more generally the status of political forces in the country. Within a regime of constrained pluralism dominated by the monarchy, and where political “dissensus” has often been neutralized by force as much as by persuasion (or co-optation), some may be tempted to reiterate a schema that has often been convoked to account for relations between sovereign and political elites: that of a deliberate but unstoppable defusing of all forms of dissidence. And yet the social and political history of Moroccan opposition groups can be read very differently. In considering the plural forms of contestation, mobilization, and political conflict, this article shows, on the contrary, that the arenas of opposition come in many shapes and sizes, that they are negotiated rather than fixed top down in advance, and that they are the site of practices and commitments that are reinvented and adapted depending on what is at stake, the circumstances, and the repression that is brought to bear upon them.

    Le Mouvement du 20 février questionne les dynamiques qui traversent les oppositions marocaines et plus généralement l’état des forces politiques. Au sein d’un régime de pluralisme limité, dominé par l’institution monarchique où le « dissensus » politique fut souvent neutralisé par la force autant que par la persuasion (ou la cooptation), d’aucuns seraient tentés de réactualiser un schéma maintes fois convoqué pour rendre compte des relations entre le souverain et les élites politiques : celui d’un désamorçage savant mais imparable de toute forme de dissidence. Pourtant, l’histoire sociale et politique des oppositions marocaines peut se lire bien différemment. En considérant des formes plurielles de contestations, de mobilisations et de conflits politiques, cet article montre au contraire que les arènes de l’opposition sont à géométrie variable, qu’elles sont négociées et non d’avance fixées par en haut ; qu’elles sont le lieu de pratiques, d’engagements qui se réinventent et s’adaptent selon les enjeux, la conjoncture et la répression.
