If one is to believe the international media, apparently impressed by the subtle way in which the Moroccan monarchy has played its cards in the context of the Arab Spring, Mohammed VI is an enlightened young king open to democracy. A closer look, however, reveals that the Moroccan king keeps at his disposal the entire panoply of the oriental despot: absolute powers legitimized by divine law, unlimited personal wealth, and an outrageous cult of personality. . . nothing is missing. Except, perhaps, the autocratic personality such a role requires.

À en croire les médias internationaux, impressionnés par la manière subtile dont la monarchie marocaine a tiré son épingle du Printemps arabe, Mohammed VI serait un jeune roi avisé et ouvert à la démocratie.
