The gestation of numismatic collections and, in general, the antiquarian tradition in Mallorca is a consequence of the diffusion of enlightened ideals. This paper systematizes published data related to the archaeological findings of the 18th century on the island, and it also provides unpublished information from different documentary sources. On the other hand, the biographies of major collectors, most of whom, like Gabriel Flor, formed Bonaventura Serra’s social circle, are also reviewed. In addition, I analyse some inventories of monetary collections which have remained unpublished up to this moment.
