Barbey d'Aurevilly's return to his origins is well attested by The She-Devil (L'Ensorcelée, 1852) and Dessous de cartes. Yet, just as their heroes combine dandyism and ugliness, the return to old values expresses itself in their negativisation : hunters veer to butchery while the priest's vocation seems to demonism.
