El acceso abierto en America Latina: situación actual y expectativas

    Tradicionalmente, el acceso a la información científica a nivel mundial ha sido exclusivo de grupos selectos, entre ellos los maestros, los investigadores y los estudiantes universitarios. En América Latina, la situación ha tenido algunas variables adicionales, entre ellas el costo de subscripción y la falta de contenido en español en revistas académico-científicas. Afortunadamente, los avances en las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación están modificando positivamente la divulgación de la información digital en el mundo. El surgimiento del movimiento de Acceso Abierto (AA) está dando lugar a cambios positivos en la creación y diseminación de la información científica. Este artículo presenta los resultados de un análisis de la situación actual y las expectativas sobre lo que el movimiento de AA puede significar para los países de América Latina.

    Access to scientific information in the world has traditionally been exclusive to selected groups, including professors, researchers, and students in higher education. In Latin America, the situation has had a few other variables: such as the cost of subscriptions and the lack of Spanish content in scientific journals. Fortunately current advancements inf Information Technology and Communication are positively changing the way digital information is disseminated in the world. For the access to scientific information, the emergence of the Open Access (OA) model is enabling positive changes in the creation and dissemination of scientific information. This article presents the results of an analysis of the current situation and the expectations that the OA movement can mean for the Latin America countries.
