  • Felisberto Hernández, an author whose work was for decades regarded dismissively, has nevertheless deserved the attention he has received from critics for some years now. The studies of his work, mainly dedicated to his particular aesthetics, are numerous and fruitful, but there are still few trying to relate the text to the context of its production. This article intends to link the Felisbertian semiotics to the crisis of the foundational myths of the nation as a symbolic context of production. From three of his most emblematic works - �Nadie encendía las lámparas�, �El balcón� and �El acomodador�- we attempt to delineate an aesthetics of the margin and the vacuum as a counterpart of the national symbolic semiotics. The conclusion is drawn that the author appropriates the modes of significance of this semiotics, subverting the mystifying intention and destabilizing the concept of text, as well as the notion of identity
