Multilingualism and self-translation are frequent phenomena in Greece (as well as in many other parts of the world). This is due to the fact that there have always been and are Greek authors that decided to write in a different language from their mother tongue; while some have decided to translate themselves. Vasilis Alexakis is a good example of these two situations, and his work is a worthy case study about the relationship between language, culture and identity.
