Fisheries management policies, a primary economic sector dealing with the protection of the commons, require complex regulations to protect both fish stocks and the profitability of activities; employment and territorial cohesion in coastal areas.
Environmental and socioeconomic effects arising from political and managerial decisions, should play, as a whole, a major role and provide a knowledge base to support decision making. In the past, the socioeconomic effects of the European fisheries policy have been underestimated. Will the EU proposal to reform the Common Fisheries Policy be able to tackle the challenge and bridge the socioeconomic sustainability gap?
