El presente trabajo presenta el producto de una revisión documental que permite contextualizar históricamente el fenómeno del juego de azar en Yucatán, así como dar a conocer investigaciones sobre la temática, realizadas en otros países donde los establecimientos de apuestas funcionan desde hace algunas décadas. Esto con el fin de elaborar un balance preliminar en torno al estado de la cuestión sobre el fenómeno. A partir de ello planteamos la temática como un campo emergente y pertinente en las ciencias sociales de nuestro país.

his work presents the product of a documentary revision that allows to make a historic contextualization of the phenomenon of gambling in Yucatán, as well to make known investigations of the same thematic that were made in other countries where gambling establishments have been in operation for some decades. The goal of this is to prepare a preliminary assessment about the state of the matter on the phenomenon. From this, we raise the issue as an emerging and relevant field of study in the Social Sciences of our country.
