  • Resumen
    • Several specimens of a species of Leptoderris from Rwanda, identified as L. harmsiana Dunn by TROUPIN (1982, 1983) and again listed under that taxon by BLOESCH et al. (2009), seemed to differ at first sight from the east African material of that species in the pubescence of the leaflets. A thorough study of the material from Rwanda, Burundi and D.R. Congo revealed that several other characters were also different from those observed in L. harmsiana, described from the Usambara mountains in East Africa.

Material from BR and LG was examined. Flowers were boiled in water and dissected under a Wild M5 lens; other measurements were made on dry material.

A new species, Leptoderris burundiensis, is described from D.R. Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. It grows in the forests, gallery forests and Pennisetum savannas of the afro-montane centre of endemism, Kivu-Ruwenzori mountain system, in the Congo-Nile Range (SCAETTA 1933) between 1800-2350 m of altitude. It has been hitertho confused with L. harmsiana, but it differs strongly from the latter in the whitish-grey, dense tomentum with short crisped hairs, not rusty-golden-brown pubescence of flexuous patent hairs of the underneath of the leaflets. Moreover, the corolla of L. burundiensis is yellow to yellow-green sometimes flushed with rose and 11-14 mm long, whereas it is white sometimes flushed with rose and 10-11 mm long in L. harmsiana. Geographically, the two species are widely separated, L. harmsiana being endemic to the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania, where it occurs between 280 and 1050 m of altitude. A distribution map and an illustration of the new species are provided.
