    Durante la época virreinal en Nueva España urbes españolas y pueblos indígenas obtuvieron el título de ciudad y un escudo de armas. Este fue un elemento fundamental para los ayuntamientos de esos centros y alrededor de ellos se comenzaron a generar sus identidades locales. Este artículo intenta recopilar de manera exhaustiva las concesiones reales de tales títulos y blasones y las condiciones en las que éstas se dieron desde el siglo XVI hasta el XVIII.

    During the viceregal era of New Spain, Spanish settlements and indigenous towns obtained the title of cities and a coat of arms. This was a fundamental element for the Town Halls of these settlements and around them their local identities began to form. This article attempts to compile exhaustively the royal concessions of those titles and blazons and the conditions in which these were given from the 16th to the 17th century.
