Resumen
Introduction: Invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast is a tumor with anatomopathological features that differ from those of other breast carcinomas. Material and methods: We made a retrospective and prospective study of 390 cases of this tumor diagnosed in 1980-1997 at the Hospital San Carlos, Hospital Doce de Octubre, and Jiménez Díaz Foundation of Madrid, Spain. This is one of the largest series published. Results: The mean size of the invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast at the time of diagnosis was 2.5 cm. The tumor was generally a pure cell type with low-to-moderate-grade malignancy. Bilaterality, presence of a tumor in the opposite breast, and the detection of positive tumor margins were less frequent than has been reported by other authors. Multicentricity and positivity for tumor hormone receptors were frequent, as has been reported in the literature.
