El texto presenta las obras ficcionales preferidas entre los lectores de Río de Janeiro en la primera mitad del ochocientos. Se hace una comparación con los libros de mayor difusión en Paris en el mismo período, observando de manera sincrónica las lecturas realizadas en ambos lugares. Algunas discrepancias notables entre las novelas en circulación en las dos ciudades son también consideradas y discutidas. El impacto que el conocimiento del gusto de los lectores puede tener sobre la manera como se escribe la historia de la literatura es analizado a lo largo del texto

The text presents the fictional works preferred by readers in Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the nineteenth century and compares these with the most widespread books in Paris in the same period, observing the synchronicity in the readings performed at both locations. Some notable discrepancies between the novels in circulation at both locations are also presented and discussed. The impact that the knowledge of the tastes of readers may have on how the history of literature is written is discussed throughout the text
