The study of asturian dialectal variation, specially central and western varieties, has traditionally focused on certain phonological features like dipthongues [ej, ow] or the general treatement of unstressed vocalism. In this paper, this approach is reformulated in morphological terms: on the one hand, both varieties show patterns for nominal derivation characterized for a different relevance of gender or number flexion. Furthermore, it could be related to some semantic differences concerning number morpheme. Finally, vowel variation in western Asturian (in lexical stems and affixes) can be explained, beyond phonetics, as expression of an emergent pattern of distributed morphology.
