    La principal característica de los álbumes ilustrados es la interacción entre palabras e imágenes en un mismo libro. Sin embargo, este artículo pretende analizar álbumes construidos solo con ilustraciones, sin necesidad de palabras. Partiendo del término «álbum mudo» acuñado por Teresa Durán, se pretende enumerar las características de los libros ilustrados que narran una historia sin texto alguno. Por otro lado, tras identiicar algunos de los prejuicios generados por dichos álbumes, se señalan las cualidades emanadas de ellos. Y por último se propone, con intención de superar la escasa presencia de álbumes mudos en el sistema literario vasco, una apropiación desde los sistemas literarios del entorno, ya que el idioma no es impedimento. Se destacan para ello, a continuación, algunos interesantes álbumes ilustrados sin palabras.

    The main feature of picture books is the interaction between words and images in one and the same book. Nevertheless, this article sets out to analyse picture books made up of illustrations alone without any need for words. On the basis of the term «silent picture book» coined by Teresa Durán, the aim is to list the features of the illustrated books that tell a story without any text at all. On the other hand, after identifying some of the biases generated by these story books, the qualities emanating from them are pointed out. And inally, a proposal is made in order to overcome the scarce presence of silent story books in the Basque literary system, which has resorted to the neighbouring literary systems, as language poses no obstacle. So some interesting picture books without words are highlighted below.
