    Catalina de Alejandría, cuya vida se sitúa en el siglo IV, recibió el título de virgen y mártir.

    Los hechos más conocidos y representados de su vida fueron los recogidos y difundidos por Santiago de la Vorágine en la Leyenda Dorada (s. XIII). En la Edad Media se la representó como figura aislada (siendo la rueda dentada su atributo más frecuente), formando parte de un ciclo alusivo a su biografía (en el que no suelen faltar su enfrentamiento filosófico con el emperador y su martirio), y desde el siglo XIV desposándose místicamente con el Niño Jesús.

    Catherine of Alexandria, who lived in the 4th century, was a virgin and a martyr. In the 13th century Jacobus de Voragine wrote and compiled a biography about her, which is an excellent guide to understand medieval depictions. In the Middle Ages, Saint Catherine was represented either as a single figure with the wheel being the attribute most often represented, as part of a cycle alluding to her biography, where her philosophical confrontation with the emperor and her martyrdom were usually present, and, after the fourteenth century, the mystical union between her and the Child Jesus.
