    San Jorge es un santo legendario cuya historia, adaptación cristiana de temas de la Antigüedad que simbolizan la lucha del bien y el mal, tuvo, sin embargo, una enorme difusión en la Edad Media (véase "Precedentes, transformaciones y proyección"). Desde muy pronto será conocido con el sobrenombre de Megalomartir (gran mártir, mártir insigne) y pasara a formar parte del grupo de los Catorce intercesores.

    El santo, oriundo de Capadocia y de familia acomodada, habría sido militar de la legión romana y podría identificarse, quizá, con el tribuno que, según Eusebio de Cesarea, se opone al edicto de Galerio contra los cristianos de Nicomedia.

    St. George is a legendary saint whose history had a huge spread in the Middle Ages even though it was originally a, Christian adaptation of a story from Antiquity that symbolized the struggle between good and evil (see "Precedents, transformations and projection"). From early on he will be known by the pseudonym Megalomartyr (great martyr, famous martyr) and he became part of the Group of the Fourteen Intercessors.

    The saint, a native of Cappadocia and born into a wealthy family, had been a soldier of the Roman legion and could be identified, perhaps, with the tribune that, according to Eusebius of Cesarea, opposed the edict of Galerius against the Christians of Nicomedia.
