  Según el Génesis, Dios, viendo la maldad que había crecido en la humanidad, decidió exterminarla junto con el resto de seres vivos. Si bien el texto bíblico es sutil al explicar los motivos de esta maldad, parece deducirse de él -y confirmarse a través de otros textos midrásicos- que los pecados de la humanidad tenían que ver con la violencia, la sexualidad y el no cumplimiento de los preceptos divinos. En cualquier caso Noé, que era un hombre justo, halló gracia a los ojos de Dios, quien decidió salvarlo. Para ello le pidió que construyese un arca de madera, indicándole las dimensiones de la misma (300 codos de largo, 50 de ancho y 30 de alto) y pidiéndole que la dividiese en tres pisos y que hiciese un tragaluz y una sola puerta en un costado. A continuación le ordenó que metiese en el arca una pareja de cada especie animal así como a los miembros de su familia, pues mandaría un diluvio que exterminaría la humanidad. Así lo hizo Noé y una vez que hubo entrado en el arca con los animales y su familia llovió durante cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, anegándose la tierra.

  Perecieron todos los seres vivos y el agua cubrió inclusive las cimas de las montañas. El arca de Noé quedó flotando sobre las aguas, que permanecieron altas por espacio de ciento cincuenta días. Al bajar las aguas el arca se posó sobre la cima del monte Ararat. Noé esperó cuarenta días más a que siguieran menguando las aguas y después abrió la ventana y soltó un cuervo, que iba y venía mientras se secaban las aguas. Soltó también una paloma que volvió rápidamente al no encontrar lugar donde posarse. Esperó siete días más y volvió a soltar la paloma que volvió trayendo una ramita de olivo en el pico. De este modo supo Noé que las aguas habían disminuido. Esperó siete días más y soltó por tercera vez a la paloma, que esta vez no regresó. La tierra ya estaba seca. Dios habló a Noé para que sacase los animales y a su familia del arca y para que volvieran a poblar la tierra. Así hizo Noé y una vez fuera ofreció un holocausto de animales en honor a Dios. Yavé prometió que nunca más exterminaría a la humanidad. Como símbolo de esta alianza, cada vez que se cubriera el cielo de nubes, se vería el arco iris.

  According to Genesis, God, seeing the evil that had grown in humanity, decided to exterminate them with the rest of the living beings. Although the biblical text is subtle to explain the reasons for this evil, it can be inferred from it -and confirmed through other Midrashic texts- that the it rained for forty days and forty nights flooding the earth. The flood killed all living things and the water covered even the tops of the mountains. Noah's ark floated on the water, which remained high for a hundred and fifty days. When the water receded the ark rested upon the summit of Mount Ararat.

  Noah waited for forty days for the water to dwindle and then he opened the window and let out a raven, which went back and forth while the waters receded. He also released a dove that turned quickly when he could not find a place to land. He waited seven more days and then the dove returned with an olive branch in its beak. Thus Noah knew that the waters had subsided. He waited seven more days and for the third time he set the dove free, but it did not return this time. The land was dry. God told Noah to disembark the animals and his family from the ark and to return to populate the earth.

  Noah did what was commanded and he offered an animal sacrifice in honor of God.Yahweh promised never to exterminate mankind again. As a symbol of this alliance, each time he covered the sky with clouds, a rainbows would follow.
