El rey Herodes el Grande, ante la noticia del nacimiento de Cristo comunicada por los Magos, ordenó matar a los niños menores de dos años que vivieran en Belén y su comarca, temiendo que su poder se viera desplazado por la venida del Mesías anunciado por los profetas. El hecho provocó la huida a Egipto de la Sagrada Familia.
