Publishers do not take kindly the digital lending, and indeed for someone it represents just a way to convey piracy or, at best, a dangerous competition to the direct purchase of the e-books. Fortunately, not everyone thinks so, but even those in favor conceive the digital lending just as a replica -often for the worse- of the traditional analog model. The American Library Association (ALA) has a strategy in this regard: "to negotiate aggressively for the most favorable and flexible terms possible".
