Música y espectáculo están presentes en la novela de Oscar Hijuelos Los reyes del mambo tocan canciones de amor, ganadora del Premio Pulitzer 1989. La adaptación cinematográfica impondrá su propia visión de la realidad ficcional; un imaginario que potencia o interroga los estereotipos en torno al sujeto caribeño. ¿Qué función cumple la representación del espectáculo en la creación literaria? ¿Qué recupera o trastoca la versión fílmica? ¿Qué se muestra y que se oculta? Estas son algunas de las preguntas que esperamos responder a través de esta comunicación.

Music and spectacle are present in Oscar Hijuelos’ novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, which won the Pulitzer price in 1989. The movie adaptation imposes its own vision of the fictional reality, an imaginary that promotes and questions the stereotypes about the Caribbean subject. What is the function of the spectacle in the literary creation? What translate or change the film? What is shown and what is hidden? These are some of the questions I will answer in this paper.
