  • Resumen
    • In an information retrieval world with continuous technological innovations and ever-growing web functionalities, subject indexing tools continue to have an irreplaceable cultural role in the information and knowledge acquisition process. Their role has been changing and is following common and crossing paths with web search engines and other online resources. Many Italian and international experiences show that linguists, lexicographers, encyclopedists and librarians who are involved in indexing have to face similar issues. Thanks to the Net and to linked data, tools from different sources and with different backgrounds are becoming interoperable and communicating, with common advantage.

Libraries offer disambiguating semantic structures to web search engines, according to the logic behind authority files. Thesauri do not only communicate with other thesauri but also with dictionaries and authoritative encyclopedias. Therefore, since quality data are made avalable to the Net, indexing languages are becoming more and more important components of the "semantic web"
