The present chapter contributes to existing open innovation literature by presenting a case of study of a large company in the telecommunications industry engaged in incorporating external developers into its innovation processes.
The results of a strategic analysis relying on the dynamic capabilities framework justify this emergent behavior in the telecommunication industry. Moreover in markets facing high levels of technological change and uncertainty, adopting outward-focused modes of innovation is mandatory to achieve dynamic abilities such as opportunity sensing and value extraction.
Contrary to other industries in which open innovation schemes are effectively articulated in a not-forprofit manner, in the telecommunication industry it is required to address third parties' expectations with clear value propositions and appealing business models.
The case of study hereby presented provides organizational, strategic and technological insights regarding emergent business models upon which open innovation regimes may take place.
